Bill C-393 was voted on today and passed 140 to 116 in the House of Commons! The bill is now on its way to committee, which is expected to occur in the fall.

We know there is still lots of work to be done, however this historic milestone means we are one major step closer to making positive changes to the justice system.

We wish to thank Gord and his colleagues for their tireless devotion to this bill. We also want to send out thanks to the media for their coverage.

Return to top of page August 24 2005 Andy profiled in the Justice Canada Monitor website
The injustice involving Andy's death was covered in the Justice Canada Monitor article "Killer Could Spend Less than Two Years in Jail for Senseless Murder".

The Justice Canada Monitor is packed full of examples of why Canada needs a serious change to our so-called 'justice system'. Changes are already starting thanks to MP Gord Brown's 'Bill C-393', which seeks mandatory minimum sentences for crimes committed with knives.

Return to top of page July 26 2005 Andy's killer denied parole!
Family and friends attended the parole hearing for Andy's killer today. The 4 hour hearing started with the reading of Victim Impact Statements and concluded with the words everyone was hoping to hear, 'parole denied'!

The Moffitt family is needless to say elated at the news and would like to thank the Parole Board for making the decision to keep another murderer off of the streets. We would also like to thank all of those who attended, with a special thanks to Leeds-Grenville MP Gord Brown, Steve Sullivan, director of the Canadian Research Centre for Victims of Crime, Detectives Dale Hayes and John Monette of the Ottawa Police Services and Mark Bonokoski of the Toronto Sun.

For more information please see the The Ottawa Sun article "Relief for victim's mom" and the The Toronto Sun articles "Year's relief for mom" and "Spinning a hero's death".

Return to top of page May 18 2005 Knife crime bill presented by Leeds-Grenville MP Gord Brown
MP Gord Brown's Bill C-393, which received first reading in the House, would give a minimum five-year sentence for manslaughter of an unarmed person with a concealed knife. The bill also restricts credit for pre-sentence custody and reduces parole eligibility for those convicted of knife crimes. Both of these measures are to help prevent what happened to Andy and his family from happening again.

Let's hope that other MPs follow Gord's lead and take action to protect Canadians.

For more information please see the The Recorder and Times article "Knife crime bill presented by Brown" and the recently created 'Bill C-393' page on Andy's web site.

Return to top of page October 23rd 2004 Andy's killer could soon be set free
Friends and family of Andy Moffitt are appalled to learn that the person who murdered Andy has applied for parole.

Andy's killer, who plead guilty to manslaughter in November of 2002, and started serving time in early 2003, received only a 5 year sentence for the brutal slaying of Andy Moffitt. Because of our weak Canadian Justice system the person who murdered Andy has a chance at spending less than two years in jail.

For more information please see the The Ottawa Sun article "Victim's family 'in shock'" and the Recorder and Times article "Keep killer behind bars, Moffitt family will plead'".

Return to top of page March 27th 2003 Canadian Justice System fails, once again
Today our so called 'justice' system failed yet another family. Andy's killer, who plead guilty to manslaughter in November of 2002, received only a 5 year sentence for the brutal slaying of Andy Moffitt in December of 1998. It is possible that with parole Andy's killer will spend less than 2 years in federal penitentiary.

After four long years the Moffitt family finally received justice when Andy's murderer pleaded guilty to manslaughter on the first day of what was supposed to be a five week jury trial for second degree murder.

In light of the mountain of evidence and witnesses, Henry Danninger had no choice but to admit to his careless act of violence.
